A disused car workshop near Coulsdon South station was ablaze last night as fire services battled to put out the raging fire.
Trains were cancelled for a short while because firemen feared there were gas cylinders in the workshop.
Firemen from Croydon, Wallington and Mitcham took five hours to get the blaze under control, the warehouse was completely destroyed.
Police are treating the fire as suspicious.
A member of the public standing on platform 2 of Coulsdon South Station took some dramatic pictures of the fire services battling the blaze.
Brett Loft, the watch manager for Croydon Fire station, was at the scene.
He said: “We were called to a fire at a one-storey, disused car workshop at about 7.30pm.
“We think the fire is suspicious because it was in a derelict building.
“We did think there were gas cylinders involved so we had to stop train services for a while.
“We surrounded the fire and put it out. We were there for about five hours.
“We sent four engines to deal with the fire.”
No one was hurt in the fire.
