A 16-year-old girl was raped in the Walton-on-the-Hill recreation ground in the early hours of this morning.
The girl was walking home when she was assaulted some time between 3am and 6am in the recreation ground near Howard Close.
Her attacker is described as a white man, aged in his mid 20s and average build. He was wearing a black coat, jeans and had a piercing in his left eyebrow. He did not speak to the victim.
The park was sealed off for forensic experts to examine the area.
Detective Inspector Jackie Elkins said: “We urgently need to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of the park between 3am and 6am this morning. "Milkmen, dog walkers, early morning joggers or commuters on their way to work may all have vital information and it is crucial I speak to them. "We are determined to find whoever is responsible and I am appealing to members of the community to help us.
“I would like to reassure the community that allegations of this nature are very rare and are taken extremely seriously.
“My officers are carrying out a thorough and extensive investigation and the park remains sealed off in order for forensic examinations to take place.
“If anyone has any information which could help with our inquiries, then please get in touch.”
Anyone with information should contact DI Elkins at Epsom CID on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference number P09241897.
