Staff at Wandsworth Prison will be able to communicate better with foreign inmates through a new programme of language classes.
The news comes after a survey showed many wanted to learn Polish because of the high number of prisoners from that country.
The classes are part of a new training centre at the prison, aiming to help staff gain new skills and qualifications in subjects like IT and maths.
It was opened last Monday by Brian Prichard, Mayor of Wandsworth, and will be run in partnership with Learn Direct and South Thames College.
