Surrey County Council (SCC) has pledged to support the county’s businesses win contracts for the 2012 Olympics in London and claim a share of the estimated £1bn generated by the event in the south-east.
The Olympic Delivery Authority estimated the 2012 games could generate more than £1bn for the regional economy, through new contracts won by companies and games-related tourism.
SCC will work with partners to explain how to successfully use Compete4 - an online resource that matches companies skills with Olympic and Paralympics contracts - and will hold sessions to help companies prepare tender documents to boost their chances of a successful bid.
Denise Saliagopoulos, the county council’s cabinet member for community services and the 2012 Olympic Games, said: “Surrey’s businesses play a key role in making the county a prosperous, vibrant place. If they thrive, we all benefit. In the current financial climate, it is especially important to help Surrey through the recession.
“Surrey is well placed to benefit from the Olympic effect because the county is between two major airports and has key road and rail links into London. We intend to ensure businesses in the county get the maximum benefit.”
Lord Coe, chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: “I support Surrey’s ambition to use the 2012 Games to bring lasting improvements to both local communities and businesses.”
