A thrown away cigerette sparked a flat fire in Hanworth.
Firecrews battled the blaze for 30 minutes in Nene Gardens at 5.45pm yesterday, after being called by a passerby.
Tenants were evacuated from the block and the flat is believed to have extensive fire damage.
The nextdoor flat also had smoke damage.
Feltham Fire Station manager Luke Rowson said: "The tenant of the flat was out at the time and did not have any smoke alarms.
"It is lucky we were called by a member of the public and responded so quickly. If the occupant had fitted smoke alarms their flat would possibly be in better condition now as there is a chance we would have been alerted earlier."
