Clarice Durrant made her appearance in this world when skirts were floor length, elegant hats were in vogue and the First World War was still years away.

A huge earthquake devastated San Francisco and the world’s largest ship, the Lusitania was launched the year she was born.

Last Friday, Clarice, who lives in Ethel Bailey Close, Epsom, celebrated her 103rd birthday with a tea party where one of the VIP guests was the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Jan Mason.

Clarice was born in Wandsworth and she was admitted to the Manor Hospital, Epsom, in 1922 at the age of 16. The hospital, now closed, was home for many long-term patients with learning disabilities.

She was transferred to Ethel Bailey Close, which is now her permanent home, 12 years ago following the development programme on the Manor site.

Raj Toofanny, home manager at Ethel Bailey Close, thanked all the staff for their contributions to Clarice’s well-being and for helping her to reach this milestone.

“At 103 she is still very caring, considerate and kind to others with a great sense of humour,” he said. “She is a very loveable person, liked by all. She can be described as a ‘jewel in the crown’ and an amazing lady.”

Clarice, who has no living family, still enjoys going out on day trips, holidays and taking part in social activities organised by the home staff.
