Passengers, including a Putney resident, on a British Airways flight to Barcelona were forced to flee their plane on emergency chutes after the cabin filled with smoke in mid-air.
The 176 travellers and crew used the Boeing 757's inflatable slides after making an emergency landing at El Prat in the Spanish city on Saturday.
Shocked passengers on the flight were bussed to the terminal and taken back to the plane less than an hour later to collect hand luggage left behind in the rush.
The flight, from Heathrow, was only moments from landing at the airport when the two pilots noticed smoke and requested emergency assistance.
Passenger Tamsyn Matthews, 30, of Felsham Road, who was travelling on business, said a "plastic" smell filled the cabin after arrival.
She told a national newspaper: "We landed and then the electrics went and the cabin crew told us to evacuate. The slides inflated with the exception of one. It was very frightening but the BA cabin crew were fantastic.
"We were bussed to the terminal where paramedics checked everyone. There were a few cuts and bruises but nothing major."
A British Airways spokesman said: "Our engineering teams will carry out a full investigation into the incident."
