A scheme aiming to get youngsters hooked on books has arrived in Streatham.
Two events at Streatham library featured free books and storytelling for children. The first session took place on July 29, and a second is set to take place on Wednesday.
They are part of the 2009 WH Smith Trust Summer Read, a scheme run by the National Literacy Trust initiative to encourage budding bookworms.
The scheme is backed by Children’s Laureate Anthony Browne.
He said: “If children are not encouraged to read for pure pleasure, we are in danger of creating a generation of non-readers.
“Allowing children to choose their own books is not only a great way to ensure they are not dragged away from reading books they enjoy - including picture books – it’s also an important part of the fun.”
