Teenagers have another chance to get a vital protection against cervical cancer at new weekly clinics.
The sessions, running at two centres in Merton, will give young women aged 17 and 18 access to the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination.
A routine HPV vaccination programme in schools was recently introduced by the Department of Health.
Free clinics targeting those who have missed the jab, to be run by Sutton and Merton PCT, are open to 17 and 18-year-olds born after September 1, 1990.
Dr Boaventura Rodrigues, a consultant in public health for the trust, said: "The benefits of introducing this vaccine will be felt by women and their families for generations to come. The vaccine protects against the viruses that cause about 70 per cent of cervical cancers.
“We estimate there are 3,000 girls in our area that need the vaccination and urge them to visit the clinics to get protected against cervical cancer.”
The clinics will run from 3pm to 5pm and take place on Wednesdays at the Wide Way Surgery in Wide Way, Mitcham and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Patrick Doody clinic in Pelham Road, Wimbledon.
