A drunken nuisance was so filthy magistrates were forced to convene his hearing in the cells to avoid getting the courtroom infested.

Unemployed Steven Brooker, 32, from Epsom was given an antisocial behaviour order after being arrested six times in under two weeks for being drunk and disorderly.

He is now banned from Espom and Ewell and from being drunk in public places for five years after he disrupted a performance at the Odeon cinema and on another occasion prevented volunteers opening the Oxfam shop in Epsom High Street.

He was given the Asbo at a special hearing at South East Surrey Magistrates' Court on Friday July 31 which was held in the cells to prevent the court room from becoming infested.

He has been banned from entering Epsom and Ewell, from being drunk or behaving in an abusive or threatening manner anywhere in Surrey or assaulting harassing, alarming or intimidating anyone in Surrey.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Gary Pickett said: “Brooker has a long history of drinking and alcohol related offences in the Guildford area and we were not about to let him become a problem here in Epsom and Ewell.

“It was clear Brooker’s behaviour was spiralling out of control after he was arrested and charged six times in under two weeks for various drunk and disorderly offences which were often witnessed by the local community.

“On one occasion officers were called to the Odeon cinema, Upper High Street, after Brooker became verbally abusive and was shouting at employees.

"He was slumped in the second row refusing to move which disrupted the film for paying customers.

“Only last Thursday (July 30) we were called to Oxfam because Brooker was slumped in the doorway which distressed and intimidated the volunteers who were unable to open the shop because they were too scared to challenge him.

“Brooker has shown no interest in engaging with Surrey Police and our partner agencies regarding his drinking issue and it is clear he is not willing to change his behaviour. Our partners are fully supportive of this ASBO in order to protect the Epsom and Ewell community.

“Brooker’s presence and behaviour had been having such a negative impact on peoples’ opinion and perception of the town centre that robust action was needed.”
