A derelict warehouse on Marlpit Lane has caught fire for the fifth time.

The blaze is the second in a week in the building near Coulsdon South station.

Thirty firefighters battled for three hours from about 6:24pm to put out the blaze near Coulsdon South station.

A spokesman from Purley fire station said: “This is the fifth fire we have had down there and they are getting progressively worse.”

Last Tuesday it took fire services five hours to put out a blaze in the warehouse.

Local residents have sent pictures into the Croydon Guardian of the fires.

Geoffrey Bacon took pictures of great clouds of smoke rising from the fire in the former Grimes garage complex.

The pictures were taken at about 6:45pm from Rutherwick Rise.

Last week a witness took pictures of firemen battling the blaze from a platform in Coulsdon South Station, where train services were cancelled for a short time as firemen feared there were gas cylinders involved.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “There were six fire engines and thirty fire fighters attending.

“The fire was in a single storey, derelict building in an industrial area.

“The fire brigade was called at 6.24pm and the fire was under control by 8.54pm.

“We are investigating the cause of the fire.”
