The jazz legend that was Fats Waller gets the tribute treatment this week as Carshalton Jazz Club open their summer/autumn season by welcoming Martin Litton and his Rhythm for a one-off special.

In their resident home at the Charles Cryer Theatre, the Jazz Club have unveiled a toe-tapping, shoe-shuffling roll call of acts for their once a month shindigs, kicking off on August 18.

And host and organiser David Burr reckons a doff of the cap to Waller is the perfect way to get things started.

He says: “Fats Waller is a true legend in every sense of the word.

“He was a marvellous pianist, he wrote an incredible number of special songs and he was an extremely talented vocalist.

“The fact that so many of his songs, like Ain’t Misbehavin’, are now considered jazz standards tells you everything you need to know.”

Internationally-renowned pianist Litton will be joined by a stellar group of friends for the gig, namely Enrico Tomasso (trumpet), James Evans (reeds), Martin Wheatley (guitar) and Graham Collicott (drums).

And Burr, who established the club in 1991, reckons things will continue to go from strength to strength.

He adds: “As long as the numbers hold we will continue to put on the very best acts that we can.

“When we started out we had no real idea how it would go but things have worked out well.

“When we moved from the Fox & Hounds the Charles Cryer Theatre was just being completed and it made perfect sense for us to set up there.

“The audience has slowly grown and as long as people keep coming up to us and telling us how much they enjoy the shows, which they do, then we must be doing something right!”
