Mole Valley District Council is among the growing number of Surrey councils furious about the Government’s decision to cap Surrey police, forcing local authorities to send out new council tax bills to every household.
Ben Tatham, Mole Valley District Council’s portfolio holder for finance and assets, said: “I want all our residents to be absolutely clear Mole Valley District Council, Surrey County Council and Surrey Police have no option in this matter.
“The Government has decreed Surrey Police had to reset its council tax levels at £1.6m less than it did in February and that this money has to be returned to the council taxpayer.
“However, to require Surrey Police to do this mid-way through the year with the consequence every bill has to be reissued just to return an average of 6p per week at a cost of £1.2m across the county, defies belief.
“No one at Mole Valley District Council supports this, but we have to comply with the law.”
Epsom and Ewell Council has already registered a protest about the need to rebill its residents.
