A woman is fighting for her life after her car was involved in a crash with a bus in Croydon.

In total 10 people were injured in the crash, which happened in Addiscombe Road about 2.10pm today.

The London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service attended the scene.

The woman, who was driving the car, has "life threatening injuries" according to the police.

The nine others injured are not thought to be life threatening at this stage.

Some of the injured have been taken to a south London hospital.

Emergency services are still on scene.

Addiscombe Road has been closed between junctions with Sandilands, Cheyne Walk and Ashburton Road.

Joanne Baker, 42, from the Addiscombe Road Veterinary Centre said: “We heard really loud screeching of tyres which turned out to be the bus.

"When we went out we saw it had crashed straight into a tree and a lady in a hatchback had crashed into another tree.

“Luckily no-one was sitting in the front of the bus because it is totally destroyed. The front of the bus has completely gone.

“The driver was awake and sitting up but he was obviously very shocked.

"I am sure he must have had neck injuries because he must not have had much time to react.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 2.07 pm today (August 6) to reports of a road traffic collision involving a bus and a car on Addiscombe Road.

“We have sent six ambulance crews, three single responders in cars, two duty officers and the air ambulance to the scene.

“One patient has been taken by air to the Royal London Hospital and a second patient – a 45-year-old man – has been taken as a priority to St George’s Hospital.

“A further seven patients have been taken to Mayday Hospital with minor injuries.”

A Transport for London spokeswoman said: "There was an incident at approximately 2.10pm this afternoon on Addiscombe Road involving a car and a route 466 double deck bus, operated by Arriva.

"Emergency services are on the scene.

"The road is closed in both directions between Ashburton Road and Shirley roundabout with local diversions in place. “We are working closely with the police and the emergency services. There will be a full investigation into this incident."

Buses on routes 119, 194, 198 and 466 are currently being diverted.
