Mitcham’s Eastfields station has been heralded as a success on the anniversary of its opening.
An unprecedented number of users and more than £500,000 worth of ticket sales has been recorded by rail operators Southern and First Capital Connect. In the last 12 months, more than 125,000 journeys were made to and from the station.
The impressive figures follow the station’s winning nomination as railway station of the year at the London transport awards.
Merton Council cabinet member for finance and regeneration, Councillor Diane Neil Mills said: "It is great to see hard proof that so many people are benefiting from the service.
“We were very passionate about getting this station off the ground and a lot of work involving the council, residents, Network Rail, the operators and Transport for London went into building this wonderful station and connecting it to the rail network."
