Students who produced a documentary on Sutton’s heritage will walk the red carpet after their film was plucked to be shown at a festival.
The Wallington High School for Girls pupils will show Obsession with Fashion at the Co-operative Young Filmmakers Festival in Bradford in October.
Yinka Ogunbiyi, Catherine Pollock, Laura Rogers, Jessica Tallett, Natasha Lall and Varvara Skugar produced the film after delving into the local studies centre’s collection of archive film in collaboration with community filmmaker company Chocolate Films.
Chocolate Films’ filmmakerr Ana Tovey, who led the filmmaking workshops, said the girls cut up the archive film shot in Sutton and used it in their own documentaries.
Their film investigates whether fashion is still important to people on the streets of Sutton today.
Miss Tovey said: “The archive’s rich collection of films dating from 1930 provided a much more vibrant insight into Sutton’s social history than could be found in any history book, and inspired the students on two different explorations of Sutton’s past.
“We’re really thrilled at the quality of the films that the young people have produced – they’ve uncovered some unique insights about how people feel about fashion and entertainment in the borough.”
Borough archivist and local studies manager Kath Shawcross said: “This was a really exciting project for us to be involved with, as our archive film collection has never been used in this way before.”Sarah Finch, head of media studies at Wallington High School For Girls, said: “I am really pleased that the girls have done so well.
“They worked exceptionally hard to develop such a strong documentary and they managed to complete all of the planning, filming and editing all within the space of a week.
“These are some very talented girls who deserve success.”
