Environmental groups could get a council grant to fund projects to cut waste, which in turn could keep council tax low.
The £5,000 environmental fund from the council is available to groups which demonstrate ways they can reduce waste or cut the consumption of energy or resources, Wandsworth Council said.
The council saves money in disposal costs if householders produce less waste, with every ton of waste not generated saving £90.
The council said it had given money to one group of neighbours who wanted to test how much they could reduce waste levels by buying a machine to accurately measure the savings they made.
Any groups given grants will be required to post continuous project updates on Project Dirt – an online community of people and groups who want to help the environment.
