Lyndon Buckwell has taken the shackles off his Epsom & Ewell troops in a bid to improve their goalscoring output.

Saturday’s 3-1 win at Wembley was a welcome return to form for Buckwell’s men, with the manager calling for a more adventurous approach as the side looks to climb the Combined Counties League Premier Division table.

“We were looking for a reaction from the lads and we got that,” said Buckwell.

“Going behind, we’ve done really well and, in the second half, there was only one team in it.

“Last season, our goal difference was excellent, but the goals scored column was a bit low.

“Defensively, we’ve always been good, but we’re trying to be a bit more adventurous this season and find the net more often.”

Robbie Burns was on the scoresheet again on Saturday as Epsom made it two wins at Wembley in under a year.

Burns has now notched eight goals this season and is well on the way to matching his impressive 24 goal tally from last season.

Mark Jarman and Ramzi Bedj-Bedj were also on target.

Epsom host promotion rivals Chertsey this Saturday, a game Buckwell knows his side must be ready for.

“I think everyone’s looking at Chertsey as the team to beat,” he added.

“With their financial backing, on paper they are the best in the league.

“We were poor against Hanworth and we know if we play like that this Saturday we’ll be punished.”

Even at this early stage, with only one promotion place to compete for, the game is an important one for the side, and one Buckwell will be using to gauge just how far the side can go.

“Every season, we try to move forward,” he said.

“Last season we were fourth, so it’s going to be difficult to surpass that but, if we can come out of Saturday’s game with a positive result, we’ll be looking upwards.”

Epsom’s next three games: Sep 19 Chertsey Town (h), 22 Wembley (EL Records Cup, h), 26 Colliers Wood United (a).
