To many people bowls is stereotyped as a ‘hobby’ for the older generation, rather than a developing and highly competitive sport, played by all ages. Egham bowls club situated in the leafy Surrey town of Egham is trying to break the mould with a healthy junior section and very competitive men’s, women’s and mixed squads.

With over 700 members playing at all different levels, from social to competitive bowlers, Egham bowls club is one of the most popular clubs in Surrey. It hosts an indoor bowling green which is considered one of the best bowling greens in Britain and picturesque outdoor facilities, which are overlooked by a well kept patio and new garden furniture to enjoy a cold beverage or home cooked style food on.

The trophy cabinet at Egham is constantly growing including, the Yetton trophy which they have won four times in the last ten years, the Denny cup, The Egham trophy which the squad won for the first time last year as a mixed team. The club also is home to several international bowlers.

Doreen Hankin and Pam Garden spend over 30 hours a week at the bowls club practising and competing in numerous tournaments and meetings, whilst fulfilling the roles of outdoor ladies captain and county match secretary . With achievements such as British isles winners, county winners and international selection for over ten years, the experience of the pair is so valuable to Egham’s success. Pam started playing bowls at 21 years old and was overwhelmed by the welcome of the club to such a new young player, something evident with Egham’s summer coaching scheme and open days.
