Concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of a forthcoming borough wide controlled drinking zone, when existing zones are not being enforced.
Streatham Green already has a controlled drinking zone (CDZ) - where alcohol can be confiscated from street drinkers when police feel it could lead to antisocial behaviour.
Streatham Wells ward councillor Julian Heather said despite the order, drunks still intimidate residents using the small park off Streatham High Road, but the police do not use their powers to tackle the problem.
Lambeth borough commander Chief Superintendent Nick Ephgrave said it had been proved in other London boroughs that the borough-wide CDZ would improve police’s ability to combat antisocial behaviour.
He said Coun Heather should bring up the problems in Streatham Green with his safer neighbourhood panel, so targeting the drinkers was made a priority for police.
Proposals for a borough-wide Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) to combat alcohol-related public disorder was approved by the council cabinet on September 14.
Now it must be approved at a meeting of the full council on October 21 before it is implemented.
The policy has been criticised as a potential infringement on resident’s civil liberties.
