Kingston’s police chief expressed his support for officers who were referred to the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) after an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Borough commander Chief Superintendent Martin Greenslade described the investigation as “standard procedure” and said he was 100 per cent supportive of his officers.

The referral took place after a man was hospitalised with a broken jaw following a police chase through the Cambridge Road estate.

The DPS have reviewed the circumstances and decided to take no further action.

Police were called to Waters Road, Kingston, after a member of public spotted three youths tampering with motor vehicles.

Police arrived and pursued the men they believed to be involved.

One man ran on to the estate and was subsequently lost by officers, but CCTV were tracking him.

Chief Supt Greenslade said: “He then jumped from a first floor balcony and as he jumped he fell awkwardly and broke his jaw.”

He was taken to Kingston Hospital and later referred to St George’s Hospital, in Tooting.

Two men were arrested and bailed to return to Kingston police station at a later date.
