Four budding linguists at Honeywell School in Clapham have made it through to the regional finals of a national language competition.

Dan Smith, Sophia Di Lorenzo, Madalaine Leggett, Stella Stylianidis will compete against 30 other pupils from all over London on Friday.

The pupils, in years 4 to 6, will travel to Fulham for the Junior Language Challenge, where they will show off their skills in the Korean language.

The competition is run by language software company EuroTalk, which challenges pupils to learn a new language using CD Rom exercises.

In the summer term 22 students at Honeywell learnt Greek for the first round of the competition.

Penny Smith, school mum and professional translator, has been running language sessions at lunchtimes.

She said: “It’s a chance to learn a more unusual language. It’s showing children that languages aren’t scary - they’re something fun.

“When they do it over the years, they begin to see patterns across the languages and get used to the ways they are similar or different.”
