It’s that time of year again! The Surbiton Festival started in magnificent style this weekend with the RNLI rally. Judging by the events and entertainment on Saturday and Sunday, yes they had to hold the event over two days because there was so much fun to be had, the climax of the festival this coming Saturday is set to be a fantastic day for adults and children alike.

The rally was blessed with bright sunshine and warm temperatures as many indulged in the relaxed atmosphere whilst sunbathing by the river. Everyone was enjoying themselves as the Queen’s Promenade came to life. Festival-goers watched over 60 boats sail by, the 1st Surbiton Sea Scouts proved their culinary skills on the barbecue and the gondoliers raced their gondolas tirelessly at top speed. Not to mention the wonderful market and charity stands, from the bookstall to the Waterways Trust stand. Then things really lit up on Saturday evening with a spectacular illuminated sail past by the local boat clubs. Whether you are keen boat enthusiast or someone, like me, who knows virtually nothing about boats it is something everyone is amazed by. The highlight of Sunday was the demonstration by the Teddington RNLI with even more boating fun and not forgetting the wonderful marching band.

The fun carries on next weekend on the 26th with the Grand Parade and street market in the centre of Surbiton, which promises to be a fantastic family day out. The official opening ceremony takes place at 10am and will hopefully be led by The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston, Councillor Ian MacDonald. At 12 noon the much-awaited Grand Parade will take place and will include the British Legion Marching Band, historic police vehicles and, of course, the RNLI towed by Sealion Sea Scouts. Throughout the day there will be over 75 stalls from Arts & Crafts to speciality food stands. Station Parade in Surbiton Town Centre will play host to Morris Dancers, Punch & Judy shows and spectacular martial arts performances.

Surbiton festival has proved to be a favourite summer event for the Kingston community and this year is clearly no exception. All generations are brought together by this fantastic display of Surbiton and Kingston’s vibrant community spirit. The RNLI rally has started the festival off with a bang and we can expect even more this coming weekend.
