In the wake of the recent “Bloodgate” scandal surrounding the sport of Rugby and our local team Harlequins, one would not be alone in somewhat losing faith in our nation’s great pastime. However, brighter horizons are just across Surrey where Esher RFC start their campaign in the newly restructured National League One. After a topsy-turvy first season in said league, Esher managed to stay in the division. Unfortunately though, under the new guidelines, they were relegated last season and therefore unable to play in the new Guinness Championship. However, this could be just what Esher need - a blessing in disguise. It gives them time to rebuild in the newly formed division and allows them to mount a serious challenge for promotion.

Still, the club must not get ahead of itself, club rugby at this level is not as high profile as say the same level in football- many of the players have second jobs and the difference in class from the Premiership is substantial. Furthermore, whilst Esher is a well-run, family club, its facilities are less than adequate. With only one seated stand, the majority of the fans are forced to stand on a grass verge behind a fence- not ideal for the whole family. Speaking of families, the grassroots section of the club is extremely well-run. Esher field junior teams across a number of age groups, starting at Under 7’s ranging right up to Under 17’s. This gives youngsters a chance to play for a local club and even find experience in reserve fixtures. Something which is a major issue in football, the sport of Rugby, not just Esher (which is a shining example) shows us that locally born players are able to play at a high level leading to the standard of the national team improving. Not only do the youngsters get a chance, in addition the club runs eight senior sides ranging from the proper first team to the ‘Veterans’. As the club’s website suggests these teams range from “the truly serious to social rugby”.

Having already played six games this season, Esher are putting their opponents to the sword and taking full advantage of the fresh start they have been given. They top the table, winning five of their six matches, scoring over three hundred points and conceding just over one hundred, things are looking seriously bright for the team from Molesey Avenue.
