Lyndon Buckwell reckons his Epsom & Ewell side still have plenty to learn despite moving into second in the Combined Counties League last weekend.

Epsom earned a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win over previously-unbeaten Chertsey Town on Saturday, Robbie Burns scoring an injury-time winner.

But Buckwell insists no one is getting carried away at Merland Rise.

He said: “We are still quite a young side and we are learning all the time.

“There is a long way still to go and sometimes I really don’t know what team will turn up.

“But there is a real buzz about the place and the win over Chertsey has given everyone a real boost.”

Ben Hayward grabbed the other two goals as Epsom clawed their way back from a 2-0 deficit to stun the high-fliers.

And Buckwell poured praise on his new goal hero.

He added: “We have played Ben as a holding midfielder and for quite a while we have been trying to get him forward more.

“Now he has got the taste for it and I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a few more goals.

“He usually gets two in a season if we are lucky so to get two in a game is amazing.

“He was very close to joining Chertsey in the summer before eventually deciding to stay, so I think he had a real point to prove at the weekend.”

Epsom travel to Colliers Wood on Saturday as they look to maintain their strong start, and Buckwell admits he is taking nothing for granted.

He added: “We are still very inconsistent and Colliers Wood will not be easy.

“We were awful for 40 minutes last weekend and we cannot afford to start games like that.

“But we know what we have to do and everyone is up for the challenge.”
