Join Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake as he counts down the days to the Grim Challenge.

Only twenty five days to go before the Grim Challenge.

This jolly jaunt comprises a 5k run, then a 20k cycle, rounded off with another 5k run.

The distances are not too daunting, but the event takes place at Aldershot army camp, around the course used to train the tank crews.

It’s safe to assume the course won’t be as flat as a pancake and will involve lots of mud and steep hills.

With the challenge less than a month away, the need to step up my training programme has gone from urgent to critical.

A lack of preparation could jeopardise the funds pledged to St Raphael’s Hospice which does such great work. Check out straphaelshospice.org.uk for more info.

In the last two weeks I have been left gasping by Sutton Runners and humiliated by a flurry of aces and volleys delivered by local upcoming tennis star, Giuseppe Delgado.

This week, the punishment has been self-inflicted, along Bournemouth beach, during the Lib Dem conference. I have the blisters to show for it.

As the Grim Challenge is a team event, I was accompanied on the first day by Jo and Craig, the other members of my team. But by the second day, conference had taken its toll.

They failed to make the 7am rendezvous.

Time for that pep talk. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
