The re-opening of the Works nightclub as Hippodrome Kingston went without a hitch on Friday, according to a police spokesman.

There were no call-outs to the venue, no trouble and no arrests.

Kingston’s police chief had sent out a stark warning to management of the 2,000 capacity club, ahead of its re-opening.

The club has retained the same Luminar management and borough commander Chief Superintendent Martin Greenslade had warned the new name would not change the fact police would be watching very closely.

He said: “They need to make sure that they get the management of that new premises correct and run in a proper fashion otherwise we’ll take a very keen interest in their future. They may be re-opening as Hippodrome but I’ll be looking very carefully about how they operate there.”

His comments came as he spoke of a row at a foam party that spilled out on to the streets and resulted in three arrests and two fix penalty notices being issued.

A spokesman for town centre management Kingston First said the club had always been fully supportive of the town centre radio link and taken active measures to reduce trouble, including being the first club in the town to introduce knife arches.

They said: “One of the problems is you label somewhere and then you invite trouble. Good luck to them, I hope it goes well for them.”

A Luminar spokesman said: “We are excited to be opening the Hippodrome in Kingston, with the opportunity to offer customers a new music experience.

“Each session will be promoted with different sounds across three rooms, offering classic dance floor fillers and pop music favourites with commercial elector house beats.”
