The council is calling on green-minded estate residents to become official recycling champions.

No experience is necessary but those taking part should be willing to promote recyling to their neighbours.

The council spends millions of pounds of taxpayers' money each year sending waste to landfill.

Rates for such operations have almost doubled in the last two years.

The council claims a 1 per cent reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill would save it almost £14,000.

Councillor Greg Smith, cabinet member for crime and street scene, said: "I would like to urge as many estate residents as possible to volunteer to become recycling champions.

"If we all club together, there is no reason why we cannot increase our recycling rates, which in turn helps us to keen our council tax down.

"Recycling is such an easy habit to get into so why not start today?”

A recycling champion training session will take place from 2pm to 3pm on Thursday, October 8, at the White City Community Centre in India Way.
