A stolen wheelchair last seen being used as a Little Britain costume party prop is being hunted by hospital volunteers.
The wheelchair, one of six bought in 2007 by the Friends of Epsom Hospital, costs £400 and was seen over the August bank holiday being used at a fancy dress party in Epsom Common Working Mens’ Club.
A similar chair was used in a Little Britain comedy sketch featuring the characters Andy and his carer Lou.
Joan Harridge, volunteer and services co-ordinator, said: “Over the bank holiday one of our outpatient wheelchairs was taken from the entrance of Epsom General Hospital.
“We have not publicised what can now sadly be regarded as theft, hoping whoever borrowed it would return it, but so far this has not happened.
“We emphasise this chair is easily recognisable, there are no others in the area outside of Epsom General Hospital.
“We would like to think it will be returned, it is much missed during busy clinics but in case it has been abandoned we would also ask anyone who has any knowledge of where it might be to let us know so we can organise it’s return.
“It may well just be thoughtlessness on the part of whoever took it and reluctance to return it.”
The Staxi Wheelchairs are specially designed for hospital use. The chair is painted blue and has a red brake. They are not available to purchase by the general public.
Mrs Harridge said: “We just want to get the wheelchair back where it belongs and will not hold a grudge against whoever took it.”
