Carshalton will see its last bank shut for good – as not enough people are using it.
Barclays will close their branch on Carshalton High Street on December 11, and customers will have to use the Sutton or Wallington town centre branches instead.
But concerned businesses have said they will suffer because of the move.
George Blanks, whose family have owned and run Elwyns Windows from the site for about 50 years, said the community was outraged.
He said: “We use the services daily, we have three different accounts there.
“After it closes, the nearest branches will be Sutton or Wallington, but that will cost us time in terms of travel and looking for a parking space and time is money."
Bairstow Eves manager Graham Tickner said: “My wife and I have run an estate agents here for 16 years; the last six years were franchises with Bairstow Eves.
“After Barclays leave there will be no more banks in Carshalton.”
MP for Carshalton and Wallington Tom Brake said: “The closure of the last bank in Carshalton Village will be a real hammer blow.
“It is time Barclays put customers before profits and recognised they are here to provide a service as well as to make money.”
Danny Reardon, Barclays’ head of community relations for London and Southern, said the bank would close because of low customer usage and because of the number and type of transactions that are being done.
He said: “Some of these transactions can be done by using a cash machine.
“Like all retailers, we regularly review all of our business operations, including our branch network, to ensure we are operating in an effective way and providing the correct services for our customers where they need them.
“This often means opening or refurbishing a branch but occasionally the decision might be made to close a branch, for example where we have two or more branches close to each other with low customer traffic.
“There will be no job losses from this closure – all staff will be relocated to other local branches.”
