Sutton has the third smallest police force in London because it is low on the Metropolitan Police Authority’s priority list, Conservatives have claimed.

Sutton has a population of 185,900, making it the seventh smallest of the 33 London boroughs.

The borough’s Conservatives have released a report called State of Sutton: A Borough of Contradictions, where they criticise the Met for not giving the borough enough resources.

Councillor Paul Scully, leader of the Conservative opposition on Sutton Council, said: “Crime is the top priority for residents and despite reported offences being low, the fear of crime is very high. The Lib Dems are not fighting our corner with the Met to invest in a greater police presence.”

A spokesman for Sutton police said: “It’s a fact that Sutton has the third smallest number of officers. This reflects the size and population of Sutton. It’s a fact too that Sutton continues to be one of the safest boroughs.”

Coun Graham Tope, executive member for community safety on Sutton Council, said: “We have 120 more officers on our streets than three years ago. We want there to be even less crime and for people to feel safer.”
