An investigation has begun after a police car crashed into a motorcyclist this morning.

The police car is understood to have turned on its emergency lights just before the accident happened, at 8.34am on Coombe Lane West, just off the A3, near the flyover.

An ambulance was called for the motorcyclist, who was said by police to have been conscious and walking.

Kingston Council contractors later cleared up an oil spill from the crash site but no roads were closed.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission have been informed and will make a decision whether to independently investigate the crash or pass it back for a local investigation.

Initial reports confused the collision with a separate incident an hour earlier, when a 12-year-old boy was hit an hour earlier further, down the A3, by a car.

Police confirmed the boy had been hit at 7.35am on the slip road off the A3 heading to New Malden. He was taken to Kingston Hospital with minor injuries.
