Three Epsom churches, all Church of England, but with very different styles of worship, will be taking part in Back to Church Sunday, a nationwide campaign to persuade former churchgoers to return to their roots on Sunday, September 27.
Nigel Williams, local organiser and singer, said: “Epsom’s Church of England churches are all taking part, and the services will show something of the breadth of different worship styles.
“We all agree about why we are there, but there are many ways of expressing it.”
Parishioners at Christ Church, a beautiful Victorian church at the side of Epsom Common, will be welcoming people Back to Church at their informal 10am service.
There will be coffee and conversation afterwards.
The church is also holding a ministry of prayer. If something is important to you, someone will be on hand to pray privately with you about it.
At St Barnabas, the church with the distinctive new glass front in Temple Road, the Back to Church service starts at 10.15am.
The church uses a modern style of worship, with everyone in a circle round the altar.
St Martin’s is showcasing the most traditional service with choral Mattins at 11.30am, using the words of the 1662 Prayer Book.
There will be a choir and organist, and hymns will include the much-loved Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer.
Members of the congregation will be encouraged to join in with traditional Anglican chanting.
