Jamal Carr fired a first half double to help Corinthian-Casuals to a 5-1 demolition of Ashford Town - moving the club into seventh position in the division, just outside a play-off spot, writes Greg Keane.
The winger opened the scoring with a powerful header at the far post, with Glenn Boosey and Kane Sergeant both chalking up their fourth goals of the campaign. Carr then grabbed his second to make it 4-0 to Casuals at the break, before Kevin Swaisland reduced the deficits for Ashford Town, only to see Carlton Murray-Price maintain Casuals deserved four goal margin scoring at the death.
It was in fact the visitors who started the brighter of the teams, but the Casuals’ defence were resolute and caught Town on the break when Scott Corbett sent a ball down the left for Kane Sergeant to chase- he brilliantly kept the ball in play and worked it back to Glenn Boosey who lofted a ball into the back post at the second attempt, where he found the head of Jamal Carr who made a brilliantly timed run to head home his first goal of the season on 15 minutes.
From there on it was all one way traffic with Ashford Town struggling to cope with the Casuals pace and clinical approach play. Glenn Boosey then added another fine effort to his collection with a 30-yard lob/shot which lofted over the keeper to make it 2-0 after 31 minutes.
Four minutes later, Casuals were awarded a free-kick just outside the right hand side of the visitor’s box. The left footed Kane Sergeant duly delivered by scoring direct from the free-kick which whistled past the keeper into his top right hand corner.
In first half injury time Jamal Carr grabbed his second and the team’s fourth after a brilliant long ball found Saheed Sankoh who played a beautifully timed ball to Carr who found himself one on one with the Town keeper. Carr waited coolly for the keeper to balance himself one way before steering the ball home the other side.
The second half continued in much the same fashion with Casuals controlling the game for large periods. Boosey went close on 57 minutes when his half volley went just past the post, while at the other end, some brave defending from Scott Hassell, managing to block two goal-bound efforts on 64 minutes, kept Casuals lead in tact.
However on 68 minutes, Town did pull one goal back when it appeared Kevin Swaisland used his hand to help guide the ball home after a left wing cross, rather than using his head.
It was not to prove significant however as on 88 minutes, substitute Murray-Price took the ball round the keeper after a perfectly timed ball from Carr put the striker through on goal.
