Crystal Palace captain Shaun Derry has called upon Victor Moses to show more consistent form.

The England U19 international produced a scintillating display in the Eagles 1-0 win over league leaders West Bromwich Albion on Saturday but has been guilty of going missing in games earlier this season, and Derry believes that the 18-year-old, along with Sean Scannell and Nathaniel Clyne, must start to think of themselves as first team regulars.

“What Victor’s got to realise is that he can’t just play in fits and starts," said the Eagles skipper.

"He’s got to realise now he’s a first team player, he’s not a youngster anymore.

"I wish people would stop talking about the likes of Scannell and Moses and Clyne as youngsters because you are only young for a certain amount of time.

"You get to a time in your career where you’ve got to think, “right, I’m a first team player first and foremost, regardless of my age.”

"Hopefully this season they can get that outlook out of people’s minds.

"Victor Moses is a first team player, and a very capable one at that.”

Plenty of speculation surrounded Moses during the recent transfer window but with no firm offers actually tabled, it was interesting to see Arsenal’s chief scout Steve Rowley on the list of talent spotters at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Derry himself is in no doubt that the former Whitgift School pupil could play for one of the big four in the future.

“I tell Victor every day he can be as good as he wants to be," said the 31-year-old.

"He could play for one of the top four clubs in English football.

"I don’t say that lightly because he’s come up against an opponent at West Brom, Gianni Zuiverloon, who was very high on confidence, playing in front of his own crowd and he absolutely terrorised him.”

Reflecting on the last two weeks, Derry was pleased with the way Palace had responded after the low that was the 4-0 defeat at home to Scunthorpe with a performance against West Brom that exceeded everyone’s expectations.

“It’s been hard work," he said.

"The gaffer’s changed a few things out on the training field, but more importantly he’s tried to instil the confidence back in the boys because when you lose 4-0 at home confidence is the first thing that goes.

"But that soon returned after the clean sheet against Derby and they are great things to build on, clean sheets, for the defenders and forwards alike because you start defending from the front.

"I thought last week was a great performance to get us back to a level which I know we are capable of.

"Against West Brom we had a game plan and resilience as well as a belief in ourselves that we could go there and cause an upset.

"I think people underestimate us at certain times, ourselves included.

"Against West Brom we showed everybody what Crystal Palace Football Club is all about.”

Going forward Derry wanted to ensure that the West Brom victory would not be in vain.

“I’ve said to the boys that we’ve got two clean sheets on the bounce, Scunthorpe’s in the past and that’s a lesson to be learnt," he said.

"Hopefully we’ve learnt that lesson, that we didn’t prepare right, mentally we weren’t focused and ultimately we let ourselves down that day. But we’ve got two clean sheets against two very capable sides, none more so than West Brom.

"But I’ve said to the boys then it’s a waste of time winning these games if you are going to let yourself down again against the likes of Sheffield Wednesday.

"With all respect to them they are a big side, they come with a good pedigree at this level but we want to be winning our home games and we’ve got two coming up and we’re looking for maximum points.”
