Thames Ditton and Weston Green Residents’ Association celebrated its 75th anniversary on Sunday, September 27, with a garden party.
About 120 people, including past chairmen, councillors and residents, attended the celebrations, where a cake decorated with the association’s logo of a swan, river and cottage was cut.
The association, one of the oldest in the country, was set up in 1934 to fight a proposed route of the Esher bypass, which would have destroyed the commons of Thames Ditton and Weston Green.
Since then, the association has also campaigned against plans such as a demolishing half of Thames Ditton High Street in 1966 and a proposed Tesco at Giggs Hill Green in the early 1990s.
