Leatherhead bowed out of this year’s FA Cup competition after a brave display at Fetcham Grove on Tuesday night.
Goalkeeper Craig Bradshaw saved a second half penalty to take the second qualifying round replay into extra time, before a Joe Keehan header after 102 minutes finally broke the deadlock to take Lewes through to the next round.
With Jon Coke and Iain Hendry both sustaining injuries in Saturday’s match, Mick Sullivan had Dean Gunner switched to right back, Matt Francis in at left back and Dan Dean partnering captain Chris Boulter in central defence.
Lewes showed a lot more composure than in the first match and played with greater purpose and accuracy. Right from the start they proved to be a handful in all areas, with Danny Royce looking particularly dangerous launching attacks down the right hand side.
Yet for all their early possession, the Rooks were unable to break down the resolute Tanners defence.
Leatherhead’s best chance in the opening half came from a corner after 20 minutes. Tony Cuff’s delivery was fed in to Dominic O’Shea whose shot on the turn went narrowly over.
Play was then held up for a couple of minutes after a clash of heads between Leatherhead’s Josh Smith and Lewes’ Ross Sutton, which saw the Rooks defender sustaining a nasty cut. He was replaced by Ryan Storrie.
At this stage the match became more untidy with players from both sides being shown yellow cards from referee Sam Lewis. Leatherhead’s Matt Francis was first into the book for a high tackle and he was quickly followed by Lewes’ Chris Breach for a similar offence.
There were three more bookings in quick succession at the start of the second half. Leatherhead’s Gunner was cautioned for a foul on David Wheeler before the Lewes player was then yellow carded for a poor challenge on Chris Boulter.
Moments later the referee added Cuff’s name to the growing list of miscreants after a number of late tackles on Lewes players had gone unchecked.
Lewes thought they had scored after 55 minutes when the ball was bundled over the goal line, but the referee blew up for a challenge on Bradshaw.
The Tanners made a double substitution after 58 minutes with Cuff and Tommy Hutchings being replaced by Gabriel Emechete and Greg Andrews.
Lewes increasingly played like a team who were two divisions above their opponents.
The Blue Square South side were awarded a penalty midway through the second half after one of their forwards went down in the box, although it was unclear which Leatherhead player had made any challenge.
Keehan hit the ball firmly to Bradshaw’s left, but for the third time this season the Leatherhead keeper got down well to push the ball away from danger.
With the game becoming increasingly untidy Emechete was booked and then substituted after spending less than a quarter of an hour on the pitch.
Sullivan played his final card by introducing Kwabena Agyei into the attack, but the new striker received little service from his tiring Tanners team mates.
Lewes had a great chance to win the match in normal time when an unmarked Breach received the ball six yards from goal but headed it straight into the arms of Bradshaw.
The Rooks attacks grew in confidence as their captain Anthony Barness took the ball past three Leatherhead defenders before shooting wide of the mark.
As the tie moved into extra time a light mist descended upon Fetcham Grove. Lewes finally broke the deadlock just before the half time break.
A quick move down the right saw the ball delivered to an unmarked Keehan, who calmly headed it past Bradshaw.
Leatherhead were unable to respond to any effect with the Rooks goalkeeper Rikki Banks having little to do all evening.
The Tanners ended the tie with 10 men as Marc Elston pulled up injured five minutes before the final whistle and had to be helped off the pitch.
And so the magic of the FA Cup comes to an end for another season. Leatherhead return to League action on Tuesday against Corinthian-Casuals.
But before that there’s another cup competition this weekend, as Thamesmead Town visit Fetcham Grove in the Preliminary Round of the FA Trophy.
Leatherhead: Bradshaw, Gunner, Francis, Boulter, Dean, Nyang, Elston, Cuff (Emechete, Agyei), O’Shea, Hutchings (Andrews), Smith.
