A protest against the closure of Carshalton’s last bank has fallen on deaf ears.
Last week the Sutton Guardian reported Barclays will close the branch on Carshalton High Street on December 11, as not enough people are using it.
But residents who disagree with the claim later held a public meeting and called on the bank to explain the closure.
One woman, who did not want to be named, said: “There are elderly people who will struggle to get to the Sutton and Wallington branches and lots of other residents will also suffer with the traffic and inconvenience of having to get to another branch.”
George Blanks, whose family have owned and run Elwyns Windows from the site for about 50 years, said his business would be affected by the closure.
A Barclays spokesperson said: “The decision to close our branch at Carshalton has not been taken lightly.
“A range of different factors were carefully taken into account.
“We can assure our personal and business customers our staff will work hard to make the transition to the new branch a smooth process and they will be contacting them individually to give them all the support they can.”
