Two late second-half goals from Glenn Boosey and Carlton Murray-Price earned Casuals a deserved replay at Worthing on Tuesday night, after two headed goals had put Worthing 2-0 up before the break, writes Greg Keane.
At a blustery King George’s Field, Casuals stared sloppily and allowed Worthing captain Glenn Woodburn to head home unchallenged from a corner after 2 minutes to give the visitors the lead.
This early set back seemed to wake Casuals up as the lively Jamal Carr was played in down the right and his deflected low drive had to be smartly turned behind by Alan Mansfield in the Worthing goal.
From the resulting corner, Saheed Sankoh failed to hit the target with a header just outside the 6 yard box which should have levelled the scoring.
Casuals were playing the better football of the two, but Matt Mann in the Casuals goal did well to save a sweetly struck volley from Jamie Brotherton on 22 minutes.
Twenty-seven minutes in, Murray-Price would certainly feel he should have done better after Carr, who was playing against his former side, found the ball at his feet in the visitors area, played a ball back to Murray-Price on the angle of the 6-yard box, but Murray-Price failed to get enough power on the ball and was comfortable for the visiting keeper in the end.
Carr was played through once again a minute later, but this time Mansfield saved brilliantly with his legs to somehow keep Worthing’s lead intact.
However, Worthing grabbed their second a minute before half time as Brotherton headed home a right wing cross- with Mann diving away to his right.
It could have been all over before half time as Mann saved brilliantly to deny Ben Johnson and then Brett Patton’s follow up shot was superbly blocked by Tom Jelley on the line.
The heavy winds were certainly making it difficult for both sets of players in the second half, but Casuals were looking much the more threatening.
Boosey had another 30-yard effort, but unfortunately this time it went inches past the post with the Worthing keeper scrambling across his line.
But Casuals finally manage to open their account on 70 minutes.
Lee Matthews and Tyrone Myton combined to cross to Murray-Price in the box whose volley was saved well by Mansfield only to find its way to Boosey who slotted the ball home underneath the keeper to give the hosts some real hope.
The Worthing skipper saw red 5-minutes before the end after receiving a second yellow card- and from the resulting free kick, substitute Byron Brown’s long ball found the head of Gavin Cartwright who headed down to Murray-Price who expertly turned his man and clinically finished past the keeper to draw Casuals deservedly level.
