Local organisations got together last week to warn old people of the dangers of distraction burglaries.

The Trickster production was performed to more than 130 old people around Elmbridge and highlighted the tactics bogus callers use to get into people’s homes before robbing them.

The event coincided with Distraction Burglary week, which ran from Monday, September 28 to Friday, October 2.

The week was launched by TV news presenter Nicholas Owen and the production was kindly funded by Surrey County Councillor Ian Lake and Mike Bennison.

Organisations that supported the awareness week included the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, Surrey County Council, Elmbridge Council, Sutton and East Surrey Water and Surrey Police.

Information cards were also handed out during the week, containing tips about keeping safe and helpful numbers to call.

Police Constable Mark Howells, the crime reduction adviser in Elmbridge, said: “Elmbridge is a safe place to live and distraction burglary is low, but there are a few criminals that prey on older people and by working together we can reduce this crime.

“If the bell should ring please remember to ask yourself: Is anyone expected and is the back door locked?

“Always put your chain on before opening the front door, ask for the callers ID and then check it by telephone. Remember if you are unsure - never let anyone in to your home.”
