The new regime of bin collections has got off to a good start, according to Elmbridge Council.
Bin men started collecting food waste once a week as part of its new collection service.
Over the next few weeks, residents will see 12 new collection vehicles phased in.
The new vehicles have split bodies with two sections that enable food and either refuse or recycling to be collected at the same time, while being kept separate.
Homes will have just one vehicle visit them each week to collect either food and refuse or food and recycling.
The new vehicles also have front and rear steering to help them get around obstructions such as parked cars.
Councillor Glenn Dearlove, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “I’m really pleased by residents’ response to the new service which has started really well, and will increase recycling and composting levels to about 50 per cent.
“The new service has many other benefits, not least the reduction in the number of vehicles collecting waste that helps reduce traffic congestion and fuel use with lower emissions.”
