This spritely lady from Roehampton is urging residents to get active for World Mental Health Day on Saturday.

Siobhan O'Neill, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder seven years ago, says exercise is a vital part of keeping good mental health.

The 45-year-old is helping to organise a Get Moving event in Regent’s Park on Saturday, which will feature dancing and live music.

She said: “It’s important to get out and about to get some fresh air and exercise, because it releases endorphins.

"It has the potential to help you make connections with people and it will make you feel good about yourself.”

Ms O’Neill put on four stone when the medication she was taking started wreaking havoc with her metabolism.

In a bid to regain control of her weight, she began taking aerobics classes - and was soon fit enough to take part in charity runs.

The activities helped her to make new friends and the positive effects on her mental health meant she could reduce her medication doses.

Get Moving is part of the Time to Change programme, organised by the mental heath charities Mind and Rethink.

Events have been organised across London to promote well-being and tackle the stigma surrounding mental illness.
