Cocks Crescent in New Malden has been all but rejected as a site for a new “super surgery”, it has emerged, unless enough people demand it in this month’s public consultation.
Kingston Council had previously confirmed a new £1m super surgery could be the future for the resource centre, but stressed elderly users of the two day centres currently using the site would be consulted.
But Kingston NHS, which is leading a public consultation into building polyclinics in Kingston and Surbiton said, despite an early consultant’s report, the building was too outdated to be developed.
The first public meeting was held in Christ Church, New Malden, this afternoon, with a handful of people attending.
Clive Natrass, project manager for Kingston NHS, said there were no plans for a new building in the Maldens and Coombe area similar to the plans for the Surbiton Hospital site.
Instead, patients were being asked their views on the whole way healthcare works in the area, with questions including what people would most like to see improve about care in their area and which services they would most like to see move closer to where they live.
But Mr Natrass said Cocks Crescent could come back into the frame. He said: “If we get a lot of people coming back and saying this is a very good thing to do but that’s not our thinking.”
Another meeting will take place this evening at 7.30pm, chaired by Kingston and Surbiton MP Edward Davey.
He said: “We need to make sure people know about these consultation meetings so we can get more and more people along during the month.”
