This was the shocking scene in Queenstown Road, Battersea, yesterday when a double decker bus ploughed into a house.

Miraculously, no-one was seriously injured - but one family’s living room was obliterated in the crash just after 2pm.

Ambulance crews treated five people at the scene and took four to hospital with minor injuries, including a 10-year-old boy.

Neighbour Jo Chamberlin, 22, said: “We heard the bang at about 2pm and rushed out. Then it all got very exciting. There were police everywhere. They shut everything off pretty quickly.

“I saw a boy who said he had been hurt, but no-one looked hurt. The driver was just sitting there in complete shock.”

It is understood the 137 to Streatham Hill was pulling out from the kerb when it swerved to avoid a van and an on-coming car.

The bus then ploughed into two parked cars and the front of a terraced house.

There were also rumours the bus driver, a young woman, had a heart attack, but there is no evidence to support this.

Three patients - a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 30s and a boy of around 10 years old - were taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with minor injuries.

A woman in her 60s was also taken to King’s College Hospital and treated for shock.

Tenants from five flats were evacuated after the crash, including a mother with her 13-day-old baby.

Fortunately, the family in the ground floor flat were out.

At 6pm last night council workers were securing the ground floor flat so that the last family could be allowed back in.

According to Servite Houses, which runs the properties, the structural damage to the building was not serious.

Denise Reeves, regional housing manager, said: “By the time we got here the road was closed and the bus was still sticking out of the house.

“The driver was sitting nearby with bruises and cuts but no-one else was hurt. It’s a miracle.

“Our concern has been the families. We have been looking after them and packing them off to get tea.”

The road was closed between Battersea Park Road and Lavender Hill until about 7pm.

Police are still unsure how the accident occurred and no arrests have been made.
