Faith leaders have shown their support for efforts by the mayor of Kingston to help end homelessness.
At any time, between 500 and 600 people are homeless within Kingston.
Mayor councillor Ian McDonald said: “I have seen people who have been made redundant sleeping on the streets and families split up due to the stress of money. “Add to this the troubles of ex-servicemen and women trying to recover from battle stress and those with mental and physical disabilities and we have a situation that shouldn’t exist in the 21st century.”
His charity aims to provide temporary night showers over the winter, using church halls with showers, food, a GP and eventually dentists, and also to raise £20,000 to re-house 43 people or families who are currently split up.
