NHS Croydon has launched a new service to cut repeat pregnancies amongst teenagers in Croydon.
The new drop-in service for young people aged 19 and under provides advice on the use of Long Acting Reversible Contraception LARC.
This includes the implant, injection, intrauterine devices (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS). These methods are all over 99 per cent effective, with less than one failure per 1000 women per year.
A poster campaign is promoting the use of LARC.
Kate Naish, from NHS Croydon, said: “We are seeing a rise in the number of terminations, repeat terminations and repeat births among young teenage women in Croydon often due to inappropriate or poor use of contraception, such as the oral contraceptive pill or condoms.
“LARC methods will help ensure that the numbers of unintended teenage conceptions are reduced and offer young people the peace of mind that they are using the most effective form of contraception available.”
The new LARC clinics for young people are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays 11.00am - 7pm and Saturday 9.45am -12.30pm at the Croydon NHS Walk-In Centre, 45 High Street, Croydon.
