A gang of volunteer bloodrunners from New Malden want supporters to come forward to help them provide a valuable community service.
For past 15 years, Service by Emergency Riding Volunteers (Serv) have been working throughout the night to deliver blood to hospitals throughout Surrey, including St Peter’s, Chertsey, St Helier and Epsom.
Working from a cramped office in New Malden, the group claims they have saved the NHS thousands of pounds by delivering blood to hospital late at night, when the usual commercial services are no longer running.
Every night, members of the team are on standby to deliver blood to hospitals, usually paying for their fuel themselves and through fundraising activities.
But a welcome boost to their funds was received this year in the form of a £5,000 grant from the 2009 GSK Weybridge Local Health Awards, one of five awards given out by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.
Serv now wants to hear from other local businesses that can offer sponsorship or riders who would like to become part of the team.
Interested volunteers can contact Tim Goodman, Serv secretary, on 07785 110 443.
