A new scheme introduced by local GPs to improve local healthcare has been shortlisted for a major health award.
MEDLInC (Molesey, Epsom Downs and Leatherhead Integrated Care), which was set up by 18 local GP practices, has been put forward in the National Association of Primary Care best integrated care category.
MEDLInC has been commissioned by NHS Surrey to integrate services usually delivered by several different organisations.
It was shortlisted for its work with Epsom and St Helier University Hospital NHS Trust to improve the system of referring patients for treatment after attending the A&E department.
The aim is to make sure that treatment can be carried out near the patients’ homes when appropriate.
The award panel also recognised MEDLInC’s work in integrating public health initiatives, such as stop smoking, sexual health and obesity prevention, with more traditional care services, and allowing patients to access the healthcare system from a variety of sources to suit them.
Tadworth GP and chairman of MEDLInC, Dr Peter Stott, said: “We are thrilled that MEDLInC has been recognised in this way.
"Setting up this federation has been a labour of love for many of us in the local area, and has already delivered massive improvements in integrating the care received by patients through creating a more seamless and consistent care system across the multitude of individual healthcare providers.
“Of course there is always much more to do, but to be chosen as a finalist for this award has been a real encouragement.”
