A burglar attacked an 87-year-old woman after being caught red-handed at her property.

The pensioner was watching television at home in Picquets Way, Banstead, when she found the burglar rummaging through her house sometime between 6.30pm and 7pm last Tuesday.

He claimed he was looking for someone but when the woman opened the front door and asked him to leave, the thug became aggressive and hit her.

She shouted for help and a neighbour came to her assistance.

Surrey Police are now appealing for witnesses who may help catch the burglar.

He is described as a white man, tall and of heavy build, who was wearing a dark coloured woolly hat and dark clothing.

Detective Constable Audrey Cumiskey said: “The burglar carried out a thorough search of the property while his elderly victim was downstairs watching television.

"We need to identify and arrest this man before he strikes again.

“When he was challenged by the lady he very quickly became aggressive and did not think twice about striking a frail 87-year-old woman.

"Clearly this man needs to be removed from the streets and with your help we can ensure he is brought to justice.

“Crimes like this are very rare in Banstead and we are working closely with local neighbourhood officers to ensure the community is safe and feels safe.

“I would urge anyone who was in, or near, Picquets Way, Banstead last Tuesday (November 10) between 6.30pm and 7pm to think back and if you remember seeing a man matching this suspect’s description please get in touch. We are working hard to crack down on burglaries but we need your help.”

Anyone with information regarding this burglary is urged to contact the Pro-active Investigation Team at Reigate police station on 0845 125 2222.
