Mitcham Rugby Club have raised more than £10,000 in memory of Daniel Simpson, a former club member who was killed in Afghanistan in July.
The 20-year-old rifleman from Croydon, one of five soldiers killed in an early morning Taliban ambush, left behind an eight-month-old son, Alfie.
A cheque for £10,632, raised from the Daniel Simpson Memorial Sevens Tournament in October, was presented by club president Mike Kelly and chairman Pete Hegarty to Danny’s parents, Bob and Debbie, on behalf of three nominated charities - Help for Heroes, the second Battalion Rifles and Afghan Mums.
Two soldiers who were badly injured in the incident that took Danny’s life attended the presentation.
